Balancing and vibration diagnostics services: where to start in your case

For some, the machine started shaking after the wheel was cleaned, and it's obvious weights are needed. For others, vibration has risen for no clear reason, and balancing there might change nothing at all. This is a fork-in-the-road page: it shows which service fits your situation, what happens on site, and what it costs. Based in Vila Nova de Gaia, near Porto, we travel across Portugal.

In short: We do four things. We balance rotors right on site, in their own bearing housings, without removal. We run vibration diagnostics when the cause of raised vibration isn't obvious. We measure and analyse vibration for acceptance after repairs and for condition monitoring. We supply Balanset-1A instruments to those who want to balance in-house, with consultation support while they learn the ropes. If you already know you have unbalance, start with balancing. If you don't know the cause, start with diagnostics: it costs less than three wasted trial runs and a second visit.

Your situation and the first step

Half of all enquiries start with "we need balancing" and end with tightening bolts, replacing a bearing, or a shaft alignment. The other half is the opposite: people spend months replacing components when fitting two weights would have been enough. So the first question isn't "how much does balancing cost", it's "what's actually going on with your machine".

Diagnostics and balancing often happen in a single visit. We come out, measure, and if the picture is clear, we balance right there. You don't pay separately for "diagnostics before balancing": the initial reading is part of the job.

Five lines of work

Formally these are separate services; in practice they all rest on the same set of instruments and the same measurement method. The difference is in how each one ends: with weights on the rotor, a finding on the cause, a report, or an instrument in your own hands.

On-site rotor balancing

The rotor turns in its own bearing housings, in its own casing, at its own running speed. We fit two accelerometers (vibration sensors) on the bearings and a laser phase sensor aimed at a reflective marker on the shaft, take an initial reading, then run trials with a known weight. The instrument calculates the correction mass and angle using the influence-coefficient method, from how the machine responded to the trial weight. One correction plane (the rotor cross-section where the weight goes) or two, depending on the rotor's geometry and speed. No removal, transport or re-installation needed, and the result accounts for the real stiffness of the bearings and foundation, which balancing on a machine can never give you.

Vibration diagnostics

The task here is different: not to reduce vibration, but to understand where it comes from. We look at the spectrum (vibration broken down by frequency), the ratio between overall vibration and the 1x running-speed component, the behaviour of the phase (the angle showing where the heavy spot sits on the rotor), and the response to a change in speed. We separate out unbalance, misalignment, loose fastenings and soft foot, bearing defects, rubbing, hydraulic and electromagnetic causes, and structural resonance. What you get is not a list of possible causes copied from the internet, but a finding on your specific machine and a clear next step.

Vibration analysis and check readings

Measuring vibration velocity in mm/s RMS (root mean square) at the bearing housings, plus spectrum, time waveform, running-speed component and phase. Used for acceptance after a repair, to establish the baseline level of a new or repaired machine, to settle a dispute over who's responsible for raised vibration, and for periodic monitoring. Assessment follows the applicable part and edition of ISO 20816, which we record in the report along with the measurement points, frequency band and operating mode.

Balanset instrument supply

The Balanset-1A costs 1975 EUR + VAT, the OEM version without the case costs 1735 EUR + VAT. The kit includes two vibration sensors, a laser phase sensor, a two-channel USB module with preamplifiers, integrators and an ADC, Windows software and a carry case. The instrument works both as a portable balancing kit and as the measuring system for a soft-bearing balancing machine. We sell directly, and also through our eBay store.

Consultation support while you learn the instrument

We don't run a separate certificate course, and we don't promise one. What we do: help you work out how to fit the sensors, how to choose the number of correction planes, what trial weight to use, which way to measure the angle, and how to read the result. We answer questions about your own specific rotors. This is consultation from engineers who design and manufacture Balanset instruments themselves and use them for on-site balancing themselves, not scripted support from a reseller.

Balancing or diagnostics: how not to order the wrong thing

The difference is simple, and it's worth understanding before you call. Balancing only reduces the running-speed component of vibration, the part that occurs exactly once per revolution. It leaves everything else untouched.

If overall vibration at the bearing is nine millimetres per second and the running-speed component is only two, weights will remove those two millimetres, and the other seven will stay. The machine will shake almost as much as before, and you'll conclude that balancing doesn't work. In fact it did work, the problem just wasn't unbalance.

That's why we always start with measurement, even when the client is sure of the diagnosis. The first half hour on site answers the question of whether weights are even worth fitting. If they're not, we say so straight away, not after three trial runs.

How a typical visit runs

    Enquiry and initial assessment

    You send photos and a short description. We reply with which package fits your rotor size, roughly how long the job will take, and what to prepare. If the description shows the job isn't ours, we say so before any visit.

  2. 02

    Agreeing the visit

    We agree a date, a shutdown window for the equipment, site access, and who on your side is responsible for start-up and lockout. Payment is 50% upfront, the rest after the work.

  3. 03

    Mechanical inspection on the stopped machine

    Housing and foot fastenings, how the impeller sits on the shaft, the condition of the blades or knives, how clean the rotor is, the belt drive, clearances, signs of rubbing, the condition of the frame and foundation. Takes fifteen to thirty minutes and often settles the question without any balancing at all.

  4. 04

    Initial reading and decision

    We fit sensors on the bearing housings, a marker and the laser phase sensor on the shaft, and run the machine at its working condition. We compare overall vibration with the running-speed component, check the spectrum and the repeatability of the phase. This is where the decision is made: balance, or look for another cause.

  5. 05

    Trial runs

    We fit a trial weight of known mass at a known radius, run the machine, and check the response. One correction plane means one trial run, two planes means two. The instrument itself checks whether the amplitude and phase changed enough for the calculation to be reliable.

  6. 06

    Fitting the correction weights

    The software outputs a mass and an angle for each plane, or, when working in fixed-position mode, straight away a blade or hole number. We attach weights with a bolt, a rivet or by welding, or remove metal by drilling. Your own team can fit the weights, in which case that work is included in the price. If we fit them, that's a separate option.

  7. 07

    Check reading and trim

    We run the machine and measure again. If we didn't reach tolerance on the first pass, the software calculates additional weights to add to the ones already fitted. One trim pass is usually enough.

  8. 08

    Report and recommendations

    We show you the figures before and after right on site. As a separate option, we write up a report with the measurement points, mode, speed, values and a polar plot. We also tell you separately what we noticed about the machine beyond unbalance, and what to watch next.

Minimum time on site is 4 hours. That's what a proper cycle takes: inspection, readings, trial runs and checking. Promises of "we'll balance it in an hour" usually mean someone is going to skip the inspection or the check reading.

What we don't do, and when we'll honestly send you elsewhere

A short list of what we turn down saves time on both sides. We don't take on any of the following, and we don't try to do it "roughly".

If, after the inspection and the initial reading, we tell you balancing won't help, you still get a result: measurements, a spectrum, and a finding on what's actually going on. That's work too, and it's billed, but it costs less than repairing at random.

Requirements for the equipment and the site

On-site balancing doesn't always work. The conditions are checkable, and it's better to go through them in advance than to find out when we arrive.

If you're unsure about any point, send photos of the rotor, the bearing housings and the access points. We'll take a look and tell you whether it's realistic on site or cheaper to remove the rotor and take it to a workshop.

What it costs

The price depends on the rotor's size, not on the industry and not on how urgently you need it. All prices are + VAT (charged at the applicable rate).

Choose the precision grade that your type of machine actually needs, not "the highest one": G6.3 is enough for most industrial fans and pumps, and G1.0 is money spent on precision that the machine's own bearings won't reproduce anyway.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need balancing, or diagnostics first?

If vibration rose right after a clear event, say cleaning the wheel, replacing a blade, resharpening knives or rewinding the rotor, start with balancing. If the cause is unknown, nobody's touched the machine, and vibration is climbing gradually, start with diagnostics. You won't pay twice: the initial reading is part of the visit, and if the picture is clear we balance in the same visit.

Do I need to remove the rotor and bring it to you?

No. We come to your site and balance the rotor in its own bearing housings, at running speed. That's the whole point of on-site work: you don't pay for removal, transport and re-installation, and the result accounts for the real stiffness of the bearings and foundation. If the rotor is already removed and sitting on its own, on-site balancing isn't right for you, that work belongs on a machine in a workshop.

How long will the work take, and for how long do I need to stop the machine?

Minimum time on site is 4 hours. Of that, the mechanical inspection takes fifteen to thirty minutes, then comes the initial reading, one or two trial runs, fitting the weights, and a check reading. The machine alternates between running and stopped through this, it isn't down for all four hours straight. We'll give you a more precise figure once we've seen photos and know the type of equipment.

What happens if balancing doesn't help?

We'll find out in the first half hour, before the first weight goes on. Balancing only reduces the running-speed component of vibration, and if most of it comes from something else, we say so straight away. You get measurements, a spectrum and a finding on the real cause, not useless weights on the rotor. We don't guarantee a specific vibration figure to anyone before we've measured.

Can I buy the instrument and balance it myself?

Yes, that's exactly why we supply the Balanset-1A. The full kit is 1975 EUR + VAT, the OEM version without the case is 1735 EUR + VAT. The kit includes two vibration sensors, a laser phase sensor, a two-channel USB module and Windows software with one- and two-plane balancing, a spectrum, tolerance calculation by G grade, and an archive for reports. Do you travel across all of Portugal?

Yes. Based in Vila Nova de Gaia, near Porto, we travel across the whole country. The first 20 km are included in the price, beyond that it's 0.60 EUR per kilometre, round trip. The minimum invoice per visit is 500 EUR, so a single small machine far from Porto is best combined with other work on the same site.
