# On-site rotor balancing in Braga: we drive up from Vila Nova de Gaia, 55 km away

> AXILINE has no workshop in Braga. We have one base, in Vila Nova de Gaia, and a van that heads up the A3 with the Balanset instruments inside. It is about 55 km to the Cávado. Once on site we measure vibration at the bearing housings and balance the rotor in its own bearings, with nothing dismantled and nothing shipped away. This page explains what changes when the customer is 55 km from the base: how travel is counted, which Minho machines call us out most often, and why putting two or three machines into one visit changes the whole bill.

## Braga at 55 km: one base, no branch

The base address is Rua das Colectividades 76 R/C ET, 4430-625 Vila Nova de Gaia. That is where the engineer sets off from, and that is where the kilometres are counted from. We have no office, no store and no resident technician in Braga, and we would rather say so up front: anyone promising you a team "in your area" from a single base is telling you a different story.

In practice the distance matters less than it looks. It is about 55 km on the A3 — less time on the road than it usually takes, once on site, to cordon off the area and mount the sensors on the machine. A Braga job fits inside a normal working day, with a return to base that evening.

What the distance really changes is how easy it is to come back. In Porto, if a machine needs a second measurement once it is hot, we drop in the following week at almost no cost. In Braga, a second visit is a second journey and counts towards the minimum invoice again. So we prepare a Braga trip to be settled first time: more questions before we leave, more photographs requested, the shutdown window confirmed in writing.

The price of the work depends on rotor size, not on the make of the machine and not on the distance. Distance only enters on the travel line, and that line is easy to check yourself: 55 km of route, minus the 20 km outbound that are included, leaves 35 km counted round trip at 0.60 EUR.

## The machines the Minho runs, and which ones call us out

The industry around Braga is not the industry of Porto. What dominates here is process manufacturing, with long shifts and machines working in dirty, hot or wet conditions — and that, far more than the age of the equipment, is what creates unbalance. In almost every case below the unbalance is not a manufacturing defect: it builds up in service, week after week.

### Textiles and finishing in the Vale do Ave

Stenter circulation fans running at 150–200 °C, with lint and finishing resins baking onto the blades unevenly. Lint extraction fans in spinning and weaving halls. Dyehouse circulation pumps and hydroextractors. On a stenter the unbalance grows in weeks and changes again the moment the impeller is cleaned, so balancing here belongs in the maintenance plan rather than being called in a panic. Hydroextractors need one distinction kept straight: an unevenly loaded basket is not rotor unbalance and cannot be corrected with masses.

### Plastics injection moulding and components

Granulators beside the presses: the knife rotor loses its balance every time a blade is reground or replaced without renewing the whole set. Chiller and cooling-tower fans on the roof, with long, light, adjustable-pitch blades that respond to very small masses — these are balanced in short steps. Blowers and vacuum pumps on central material conveying, dehumidifier and drying-hopper fans.

### Metalwork, moulds and fabrication

Grinding wheels, which need rebalancing after every dressing, and machine-tool spindles, where vibration shows up first in the surface finish and only later in the ear. Shot-blast wheels, whose blades wear fast and are replaced as a set. Weld and cutting fume extraction fans, with abrasive dust wearing one side of the impeller. Belt-drive pulleys that are running out of true or sitting on a loose taper bush.

### Food processing and poultry

Dairy separators and centrifuges, bakery oven recirculation fans with flour and fat on the blades, hammer mills in feed plants, poultry-house and refrigeration condenser fans. Poultry and cold-store installations have dozens of identical fans in one place, which makes them the Minho's best candidate for a grouped visit. Hygiene requirements shape how the correction masses are attached, and that is agreed before we set off.

### Granite and stone processing

The Minho is granite country, and quarrying and processing bring crushers, vibrating screens, dust extraction fans and conveyor drives. Abrasive dust, hammers and liners replaced in sets, constant damp: unbalance here behaves like a consumable rather than a fault, and route-based measurement pays off more than waiting for the noise.

### Ventilation in halls and warehouses

Roof and duct fans in industrial units, logistics warehouses and retail buildings. The complaint usually comes from the people underneath rather than from the maintenance fitter. Before fitting any mass we check the support structure for resonance: on a flexible base, masses give a result that disappears the first time the duty point changes.

## One machine or three: this is where the bill is decided

The drive to Braga costs about 42 EUR. What weighs on the invoice is not the distance, it is the day: a 500 EUR minimum invoice per visit and a minimum of 4 hours on site. One machine on its own pays for the whole day on its own.

From the second machine in the same visit onwards, each additional machine is 20% cheaper on the "diagnostics + balancing" total (30% from the tenth). Since there is still only one journey, the effect shows on the second machine already.

- Counts as the same visit: one address, or addresses a few minutes apart, on the same day.
- Every machine needs a shutdown window in the same shift. Three machines are no help if two of them can only stop next month.
- Machines of different sizes can go into one visit: the package is worked out rotor by rotor.
- If you do not have three machines, you probably have neighbours. In the industrial parks of Braga, Famalicão and Guimarães the units sit wall to wall, and the firm next door often runs the same fan with the same complaint. Agreeing a date between two of you splits the travel and gives both the additional-machine discount.

> Before you book, walk the shop floor with one question in mind: which other machine has been grumbling that nobody has had time to look at? In Porto that question is good practice. In Braga it is worth money.

## What a working day in Braga looks like

1. **Leaving Gaia early** — We set off early to take the A3 before the traffic into Braga and to arrive inside the agreed window. If there is a gatehouse, an induction and vehicle registration, we allow for that time separately, not out of your 4 hours of stopped machine.
2. **The first half hour: measure, do not balance** — Before any mass goes on, we measure overall vibration and the 1× component with phase at each bearing, and check the mechanics: foot bolts, clearances, bearing condition, soft foot — the imperfect seating of the machine foot on its base. That half hour decides whether balancing makes sense at all, or whether we would be throwing masses at a problem that is not unbalance.
3. **Trial runs at operating speed** — Trial mass, run-up, measurement, calculation of the influence coefficients — the exact way this rotor responds to an installed mass. There are at least three run-ups. This is the part that depends on you: every start needs your authorisation and your people.
4. **Correction mass and check measurement** — The mass goes on in the correction planes, then a check run and a measurement at the same points, in the same direction and at the same duty as the initial reading. The before and after figures are recorded as they came out, without being nudged towards a convenient line in a table.
5. **Second and third machines, if there is a window** — With the team already on site and the instruments set up, the next machine mostly costs the time it takes to move the sensors. This is where the day is won — or where, at five in the afternoon, it turns out nobody arranged the shutdown window for the second machine.
6. **Back to Gaia at the end of the day** — We do not stay overnight in Braga without reason. If the work is left half done, we say on site what is missing, how long it takes and what the second trip costs, so you can decide with figures in front of you rather than over the phone two days later.

> We keep the influence coefficients of your machine. On a later visit that allows trim balancing — a quick touch-up with no fresh trial runs: one run to measure, calculation of the additional mass, fitting, check run. At 55 km, saving half a shift of stopped machine counts for more than saving on the travel line.

## What to prepare before we fix the date

Preparation takes you an hour and decides whether the Braga trip is one visit or two. It is worth going through the list when you answer the quotation, not the night before.

- [x] Confirm the shutdown window in writing. Many Minho plants run continuous shifts, and the only real window is the Saturday morning stop or the shift changeover. We plan the trip around that window rather than the other way round.
- [x] Provide access to the correction plane — the point on the rotor where the mass is fitted: an inspection door that opens, a removable cover, an opening in the casing. If ducting or a welded guard has to come off, tell us beforehand, because it changes the plan for the day.
- [x] Prepare the sensor surfaces on the bearing housings: smooth, clean metal with no paint or dirt, so the magnet seats properly.
- [x] Clean the impeller if there is deposit visible to the naked eye — lint and resin on stenters, flour and fat in ovens, granite dust in extraction units. Balancing a dirty rotor is paying to repeat the job next month.
- [x] Check and tighten the fixings of the feet, the frame and the foundation. A soft foot spoils the result more reliably than any calculation error.
- [x] If the area is classified as explosion-risk — textile lint extraction, wood dust, flour, granite dust — say so in the enquiry. It rules out welded masses and requires bolted fixing through existing holes.
- [x] Decide who fits the masses: your own fitter and welder, included in the price, or our specialist at +150 EUR per rotor without welding and +400 EUR per rotor with welding.

> A machine at height — a roof fan, a silo, a cooling tower — needs scaffolding or a lift arranged in advance. Discovering that on arrival, 55 km from base, is the most expensive way to lose a day.

## How to book a trip to Braga

1. **Describe the machine** — Type of equipment, power or rotor mass, operating speed, type of bearings and drive, the exact site address. That is enough for us to name the package and calculate the travel to your address.
2. **Add photographs and figures** — Photographs of the whole machine, of the bearing housings and of the access to the correction plane. If you have measurements, send the overall level and the 1× component at each bearing, and say what changed on the machine in the last month: impeller cleaning, blade change, a repair, a change of duty.
3. **Give us the window and the machine list** — When the machine can genuinely be stopped and started three or more times in a row, and which other machines on the same site could go into the same visit. This is the information that decides the price per machine.
4. **Get a fixed quotation before we leave** — We send the cost of the work, the travel and the options before we leave Gaia. No rush or parking surcharges appear afterwards. If your photographs tell us it is still too early for us to come out, we say so instead of selling a journey.

**Our plant runs continuous shifts and only stops on Saturday. Can you work with that?**

Yes, and it is the most common situation in the Minho. Balancing requires run-ups at operating speed, at least three of them, so the limiting factor is almost never our diary, it is your window. Tell us first when the machine can really be stopped and started, and we confirm whether we can fit it; agreeing in that order is what makes a date hold. If the job runs longer than a day, the 140 EUR per diem is added, but at 55 km we usually drive back to Gaia and return the next morning, which normally works out cheaper — we state in the quotation which option applies.

**What if the vibration turns out not to be unbalance?**

We say so on site, with the measured figures in front of us, and not three trial runs later. Balancing only reduces the 1× component, the vibration at running frequency. It does not cure a failed bearing, loose fixings, structural resonance or misalignment — which is a cause of vibration and is corrected by shaft alignment, a different job from balancing. In that case the vibration diagnostics with report (300 EUR per machine, always billed) and the travel are invoiced all the same, with the 500 EUR minimum per visit, and you get the cause and the list of what to repair in writing.
